Chapter 3(of 6) Unscheduled extension in Japanese 2423

Exchange of the pillar and the receiving metal fittings as measures against the harm of termites which was found in the door porch, were going to be done by the construction company within the budget shown at first. So, I was relieved.

On the other hand, I examined some paints in a nearby do-it-yourself store, because I had decided to paint the roof by ourselves as well as the wall.

I was worried about selecting paint, because the kinds of paint sold in the store were limited.

Wednesday of the second week
An idea came to mind
Ten days passed after the constructionhad started. Meanwhile, I climbed and descended the scaffold (work stand) several times. Then, I felt that a change had occurred in my body, and my body was returning to normal gradually.

The idea which I likely will be able to live for another ten years or more came to mind.

I began to think that I should prepare for getting older. It will be hard for us to climb up to the second floor. Therefore, we need more space on the first floor.

Immediately, I asked for an estimate of extension through the field supervisor.

Afterwards, the architect, who came to make arrangements for the extension, recommended installing a new sash instead of transferring the old one in the Japanese-style room.

The reasons why he recommended installing a new sash, he explained. It would make security and protect from coldness when after a new sash was installed, the old one was detached.

Incidentally, I consulted him about the paint on the roof. He answered, “Many kinds of paint are stored for sale in the S shop though it is a little bit far from here".

Saturday of the second week
The groundwork of the roof It is a point to give the roof coat of a paint sealer

I bought some paint materials(paint & sealer)and required tools at the S shop which the architect had told me .

First of all, the mold and dust which had been adhered to the roof were removed with wire brushes, and I and my son gave the roof coat of a paint sealer . I hear that it is important to give sealing coat, so paint over the coat will last long.

A temporary estimate of floor extension came from the construction company in the afternoon. It was about 750,000 yen excluding the material fee of the floor. I decided on this extension of the Japanese-style room, although it had not been scheduled.

It was not so urgent, but I detached the piping of the air conditioner which occupied the extension place.

Meanwhile the entrance door was being removed, because an insulated type would be installed instead of the old door. It was the construction with cutting the tile of the earth floor beneath the door. At first, I had thought that we would be able to replace it by ourselves. I realized that it was a big mistake.

Sunday in the next day
Color of the roof

We finished giving the sealing coat, and began to paint the roof. The paint is a rust color.

In the S shop, they sell black, blue, and the rust color paint as oily paint with silicon for roofs. I thought that the rust color would be suitable for the wall of honey color. So I had chosen the rust color. But, my wife gave a candid advice that it looked like the color of blood.

Monday of the third week
Specification of the door

Replacement construction of the door of my home ended on this day. After it had gotten dark, carpenters left and I observed the door. It seemed to be different from the one which I had selected, because there was no glass panel in the double entry doors’ small door, though it was covered with the corrugated cardboard for care.

I immediately notified this thing to the construction company by an e-mail.

Tuesday of the third week
Order mistake?

The answer with "Because there was arrangements mistake of the door, it will be changed as soon as a new door comes to our company." came from the architect of the construction company.

Wednesday of the third week
The web sites cannot be used.

This day was rainy and the workers did not come.

I tried to hook up to a web site but could not.

There was an awful noise when picking up the receiver. I presumed that this was the cause. I requested a repair of noise calling NTT in the awful noise.

About one hour later a man in charge came to our home and he examined it. After a while, the man told "Rain entered and the noise was generated because the box of the lead-in of the telephone hung in the air.”

It had been detached from the wall when mortar was peeled off. He restored it without taking much time.

Friday of the third week
The base construction of extension part and exchange of bathroom sash.

Rain that had fallen for two days let up, and it became the day for the fundamental construction in the extension part.

It was necessary to pull out a tree which existed in the construction place. My son pulled it out. It was an impossible work for me because my physical strength had fallen during the sickness.
A damp proof membrane was pasted on the surface of the base (horizontal plane), and then some more cement was poured. Then, they also poured cement into a mold which formed the foundation wall.

Some waterproof sheets were pasted to the outside wall of the house, and furring strips were installed in order to make some space on those sheets when metallic sidings were installed.

The window sash of the bathroom was detached, and installed new sash with Low-E double glazing.

Meanwhile,we continued painting the roof through the weekend.

(The tree was pulled out  and  concrete was formed ) (Furring strips installation) (Original bathroom sash )

Tuesday of the fourth week
Spent a cold night with vinyl sheet.

The reconstruction work was advanced well. Some days ago, every mats in the Japanese-style room had already been taken out because the room was going to be transformed from Japanese mats floor to wooden boards floor.
As for the floor in the room, new common joint were installed, and a heat insulator was installed.
The wall and the sash in the south of the room were removed. But in a prior meeting, the architect told us that after a new wall of outside inthe extension part had been completed the old sash and wall would be removed. They seem to have had thought that they were able to install a new window within the day.

Foundation boards were installed in the Japanese-style room and some pillars clung on the completed foundation board. The roof in the extension part was installed above them.

 However, a problem occurred.
The window that was to have been installed newly was not delivered and only a sash frame was delivered. A thin vinyl seat was put on around the Japanese-style room instead of a window. Heating of living in the next did not work well.

More over,it was a night that got cold by putting of ice next morning. We spent a very cold night with only thin sheets. We were really angry.

(Japanese-style room's south part was detached) (Installation of common joint) (Heat insulator below the floor)

Wednesday of the fourth week
Correction construction of door

I called the architect of the construction company, and complained that we had spent the cold night by the window of the Japanese-style room having been removed. A salesman of the sash manufacturer came to my home to apologize in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, a shutter was installed on the aluminum sash [window frame] without window panes which had been in the problem.
The modification construction of the small door of double entry door was done. They replaced the installed small door with a door which has a glass panel.

Saturday of the fourth week
Difference between adjacent floors' levels was discovered.

The new shutter had been installed, so, the problem of crime prevention had been solved. Some boards for ground work were pasted in the Japanese-style room. Oak wood boards as floor material were installed over them.

But, I found another problem. There was a difference between adjacentfloors' heights!

[SF1] [SF2]

[SF1] The right side is the floor in Japanese-style room. In order to confirm the level I put this wood board. *
When it is equal height to the floor of left room, the space seen in the center part of this photo cannot be found.

[SF2] The lower side in the photograph is the Japanese-style room side. This thin plywood lifted floor material 3millimeters up.
